Hal grows up knowing that the only way to face his fears is to run from them. Becoming the Green Lantern is a major transition for him but highly rewarding. He learns that to truly face your fears, means to overcome them.
Chapter Four: Self and Interaction- the conscious and reflexive experience of an individual, having a personal identity that is distinctly separate from other individuals.
Socialization (located on page 101) is the process of learning and internalizing the values, beliefs, and norms of our social group, by which we become functioning members of society. This concept applies to Hal so easily. He grew up in a world where he thought arrogance and recklessness would gain him praise. He also believed that he had no fear. When the ring chose Hal, that fateful night he came upon Abin Sur, he was catapulted in to a entirely new realm. Becoming the first human to have the honor of becoming one of the Green Lantern Corpsmen, he had to give up his norms and learn their society. The Green Lantern Corps also had to be able to teach him to help socialize him. In some aspects, Hal had to give up a part of himself to become something much greater. Also, the society of Green Lantern's had to allow their ideologies to be more flexible for humans to join, since they were such a young race.
When Hal joined the new society, they began training him to make sure he could defend himself against danger. They informed him of norms that would keep him safe over a long period of time, i.e. never take the mask off where others could see him. They taught him that anonymity
was crucial for their society and that they must never show or feel fear. Hal was able to teach them that one individual can have enough faith and hope in the human race and still hold true to the values of the Green Lantern Corps.
Chapter Six –Deviance
Rebel (located on page 157) - An individual who rejects society’s approved goals and means and instead works toward their own goals using new means.
The Green Lantern shows signs of deviance from the norms of the Green Lantern Corps in the beginning. He realizes his new powers can be fun and he decides to use them for personal gain. He uses them to show off and show others that he can create what he wants, when he wants. He shows rebellion against the Corp. Based on the movie with Ryan Reynolds portraying Hal, he started off his journey into the Green Lantern Corp by showing a few of his friends his new identity.Green Lantern Showing Off In reality, he rejects the social norms of the Corp to fuel his own needs, he wants to show off his new identity to a few people to him who are closest to him. Also, Another character outside of Hal Jordan, would be Sinestro. He is a rebel because there is one point when he doubts the capabilities or the Corpsmen. He doubts their ability to use their will to fight off Parallax, he goes to the council to suggest they use Fear, a highly powerful yet unstable weapon, against Parallax. Parallax, as Sinestro is aware, is very well versed in Fear. You will notice that you see the council members scoff at the idea. With the idea put in place, it seemed as though Sinestro planned on using fear against Parallax either way, until Hal ends up defeating Parallax first.
Chapter Eight - Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experience
Discrimination (located on page 222) - unequal treatment of individuals based on their membership in a social group; usually motivated by prejudice.
In Hal's initial access to the Corps, he became fully aware that other worlds felt the Human race was too young and naive. As the Corpsmen began to train him to become a Green Lantern, they made him painfully aware of the fact, that they believed they were better than him. They would make off-hand comments such as "Are you afraid, Human?" or "A sword, how human." It was those comments that made Hal fear the training. As the Green Lantern Corps as a society, they will accept anyone of any Race, Gender, or Species, but how they treat them after the acceptance is a whole new ball game. Hal Jordan goes on to prove that there is more to the Human race than the Corps originally thought.
Chapter Ten - The Macro-Micro Link in Social Institutions: Politics, Education, and Religion
Authority (located on page 281)- The legitimate non-coercive exercise of power.
The Green Lantern Corps has a leadership that is used to maintain order in the corps, as well as maintain the peace in the galaxy. That they say goes and if you want to change a process or way they do things, you must go to a panel and request the change. I noticed that, although, they have the highest ranking power within this society, it is still common for people to disobey. They provide their wisdom and in return the members of the Corps willingly allow them to lead. Minus a few strays here and there. They are in power because they began as a group of individuals who had the same goal, protect universe from evil and create an orderly universe. Somewhere along the way, before the beginning of the Green Lantern Corps, they were gifted with wisdom, god-like abilities, and immortality. This could also be seen as a reason why they are on power, no one can kill them.
Chapter Thirteen - Leisure and Media
Synergy (located on page 380) - A mutually beneficial interaction between parts of an organization that allows it to create something greater than the sum of its individuals.
As I watched the Green Lantern, I noticed that there is a great synergy between the member of the Corps. As a whole they attribute to the betterment and safety of the galaxy. They each attribute their given abilities to the entirety of the Corps to create the Green Lantern motto:
In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!
They have to work as a team to maintain the motto. They all contribute to a greater cause and they are all of the same "organization." They create their own synergy.Green Lantern Trailer
